Charles Chaplin brought traditional theatrical forms from the British music hall into the emerging medium of Hollywood cinema in 1914 and his comic Little Tramp character rapidly became a worldwide phenomenon. Thanks to the economic independence this success gave him, Chaplin went on to address socio-economic issues in his work and denounce all forms of injustice. His masterpieces such as The Kid (1921), The Gold Rush (1925), City Lights (1931), Modern Times (1936) and The Great Dictator (1940) are milestones in the history of cinema. Chaplin was one of the rare comedians who not only financed and produced all his films (with the exception of "A Countess from Hong Kong"), but was the author, actor, director and soundtrack composer of them as well. In 1972, Chaplin received an Honorary Oscar for the incalculable effect he had in making motion pictures the art form of the 20th century.
