Bishop Joseph E. Strickland was named the fourth bishop of Tyler on the Feast of the Archangels, September 29, 2012 by Pope Benedict XVI. He was ordained Bishop, a Successor of the Apostles, on November 28, 2012. He served faithfully until his removal by Pope Francis on November 11, 2023. Prior to being named bishop, he served a number of roles in the diocese, including vicar general, judicial vicar, and pastor of the Cathedral parish. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1985.
