‘Theatre is not mere entertainment; it is a sharp weapon of the class struggle’- on the occasion of the death century of Karl Marx in 1983 this overtly political statement was adopted by Aranyak as its slogan. Aranyak was born in the turbulent time of post independence Bangladesh, when the scars of war were still fresh. Since dates have importance for posterity, it needs to be mentioned that Aranyak started its journey on 20 February 1972 with Munir Chowdhury’s play Kobor (The Burial), based on the events surrounding the oppressive regime of the Pakistani Government. This first choice decided the character of Aranyak as an anti-establishment theatre group. Aranyak’s second production Gandharba Nagari (The City of Music) dealt with the story of a fantasy city where all but a few struggle for survival.
