Founded 1990 by guitarists Esa Holopainen and Tomi Koivusaari (the latter also handling vocal duties on the first three albums), drummer Jan Rechberger (drums) and basist Olli-Pekka Laine, Helsinki-based Amorphis were one of the first bands that fused death and doom metal with folk, progressive and psychedelia. By creating an instantly recognizable sound of their own, they soon established themselves as pioneers of modern metal and are nowadays considered one of the most influential bands to hail from Finland. While already their 1993 debut, The Karelian Isthmus, won them a solid fanbase, Amorphis' breakthrough proper came with the sophomore release Tales From The Thousand Lakes (1994) and the subsequent Elegy (1996), both of which had their lyrical foundation in Finnish mythology. Ten years later, the band would return to this topic and it has since evolved into a trademark for Amorphis. In between, however, they released three albums featuring lyrics by then-singer Pasi Koskinen: Tuonela (1999), Am Universum (2001) and Far From The Sun (2003). These were more experimental in style, venturing a long way from the band's roots. After going through several changes in the 1990s and early 2000s, the band's lineup consolidated in late 2004 with original members Holopainen, Koivusaari and Rechberger plus Tomi Joutsen (vocals), Santeri Kallio (keyboards) and Niclas Etelävuori (bass). Since then, Amorphis have released five albums, which reintroduced the death metal elements while never losing sight of the melodies and modern sounds. Eclipse (2006), Silent Waters (2007), Skyforger (2009), The Beginning Of Times (2011) and Circle (2013) manifested a unique style which effortlessly manages to be brutal and beautiful, traditional and modern, concise and elaborate - forging a host of different influences into a whole that is far greater than the sum of its parts.
