The Worst Treatment Disaster In The History Of The National Health Service.
In the 1970s and 1980s around 4800 British haemophiliacs were infected with Hepatitis C through treatment with pooled blood factor concentrates, made from thousands of units of blood, sourced in regions where people were paid to donate.
The majority of these donors (mainly from the USA) lived on the very fringes of society and carried blood-borne infections.
1250 of those were also co-infected with HIV - approximately 80% of those died, less than 250 survive.
To date, an estimated 2500 people have died as a result of these infections from NHS supplied treatments.
