With a huge following New York's downtown rock 'n' roll crowd, Ruby and the Rednecks debuted at legendary Mercer Arts Center. In the band’s earlier days, Ruby and the Rednecks used to open for New York Dolls at the gigs and were greatly inspired by them.
The collapse of the Mercer Arts Center left unsigned bands little option in New York City to play original music. Mercer refugees, including Ruby and the Rednecks, soon started to play at CBGB, the birthplace of Punk Rock.
This gave momentum for Ruby and the Rednecks, booked by New York punk impresario Peter Crowley, to start performing also at Max's Kansas City, where Punk met Glam.
Thus the group became part of an era of anxiety, creativity and unusual talents starting to perform on the vibrant New York club circuit with other noted artists.
