The story of jazz music at Sibelius Academy in Helsinki began in 1983.
Kaj Backlund, a trail blazer in Finnish jazz education, led the Jazz Department at Sibelius Academy for the first three years, and in 1986, the internationally-renowned Finnish jazz drummer and composer Jukkis Uotila took over. Uotila remodeled the entire curriculum and transformed the Sibelius Academy in to one of the most highly regarded institutions in jazz education worldwide.
Now after almost 30 years Sibelius Academy is more active at the international front than ever and visiting teachers are en integral part of the activities. The list of visitors already includes more than 160 internationally acclaimed jazz names. Sibis Jazz is an internationally renowned trademark in jazz education.
In addition to its educational responsibilities, the Sibelius Academy Jazz Department is a key entity and a nexus of expertise in the Finnish jazz scene.
