Mumtaz Mufti (Urdu: ممتازمفتی) – September 11, 1905 – October 27, 1995 , unique in style and in diction, happened to be a trend setter in Urdu fiction; “short stories, novels, travelogue, persona writings and Radio drama”. He was born and raised in batala, a part of British East Punjab at the time. He then moved on to Lahore for higher education. Mumtaz Mufti started his career in British Rule as an English teacher in southern Punjab .After the Partition of India, he spent few years in Lahore and later settled for good in Islamabad.Mumtaz Mufti started as an Urdu short story writer and was first published in 1936.(His initial work portrayed him as a nonconformist and liberal writer, whose writing was apparently influenced by Freud) .Most of his initial writings including his iconic novel “AlipurkaAily” were the exhibits of that era. His transformation from Liberalism to Sufism, marked by his timeless piece of writing “Lab-baik”.
